The Trifecta of Vegetarian Appetizers:
Easy, Healthy and Delicious!
You really can’t go wrong with vegetarian appetizers, in my book. I mean everyone needs a few extra veggies in their diet so these will do just the trick next time you have friends over or need some “snicky snacks” (as my Mom likes to say).
These are all perfect for feeding hungry guests or family members and even though popular starters once included bacon topped potato wedges, or pigs in the blanket, these 100% vegetarian starters are 100% delicious.I don’t know what it is about eating with my hands but it always conjures up a good time! Maybe it reminds me of the light-hearted days of childhood and not worrying about having sticky fingers or of snacking at get-togethers while hanging out with friends. Another thing I love is how you can taste and try a wider variety of flavors because vegetarian appetizers come in bite-size portions. Regardless of the reason, I just think finger foods are more fun!
Whatever your occasion may be, there is sure to be a vegetarian appetizer on this page that will satisfy your craving and work perfectly. Whether it be pot-luck, wine-and-cheese gathering or just a simple end-of-the-week meal. (I eat guacamole for dinner more often that I’d like to admit.)
9 Vegetarian Appetizers
- My Mom used to make this black bean salsa recipe on hot summer days. I remember coming back from the pool and chowing down on it with crispy tortilla chips all afternoon (that’s what summers are for, right?). This is healthy, simple-as-can-be and it’s really easy to make a huge batch for summer cook-outs or pool parties.

- For game days or chilly Sunday afternoons few things beat the simultaneous creaminess and tart healthfulness of this spinach and artichoke dip recipe. I reengineered this fatty classic to be healthier and lighter. It goes great served with pita chips, toasted baguette or sliced fresh veggies.

- Mmm...sweet potatoes could be one of the most delicious and versatile root vegetables out there and I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t love them. This sweet potato fries recipe can be served with dinner (say...black bean burgers) or as an appetizer--just be sure to make enough cause these little guys will be gone before you know it. (For real, though.)

- Hummus: one of the great classic vegetarian dips that will always have a place in my heart and in my fridge. There are plenty of store-bought varieties out there but they can get a bit pricey and there are also limited flavors available. Learn how to make hummus at home because it’s simple, cheap and you can play around with all sorts of different add-ins that suit your fancy.

- Everybody likes to snack on something crunchy so nuts are a great thing to have on hand. Try this spiced nuts recipe (both savory and sweet versions) and you'll have something a little healthier than potato chips to keep people happily munching away.

- Okay I said it before, I’ll say it again: there are nights when I just eat guacamole for dinner. I’ve been known to eat an avocado a day when they’re in season. I just can’t get enough of them! If you too cherish these green goddesses then you must learn how to make guacamole. It’s expensive to buy in the store or restaurant and it’s always better fresh.

|
- Vegetarian stuffed mushrooms are another standard party starter. They’re great all year round and make the perfect appetizer for holiday gatherings. I’ve found that these hearty treats go over big with the meat-eating crew.

|
- Try your hand at learning how to make bruschetta and you won't be disappointed! This simple snack can be whipped up in the summer when tomatoes are fresh off the vine and I must say, folks always seem to be impressed with this one even though it’s ridiculously easy.

|
- Another one of my favorite mid-afternoon snacks to make is this black bean dip recipe. It has the perfect balance of being light enough not to ruin your appetite but filling enough to fend off hunger pains. You can keep it in the fridge and pull it out when you’re starving as you return home from work or school.
